Population officials and demographers have much to worry about China's increasingly aging population. It is estimated that the proportion of people aged 60 or older in China will rise to 11.8 percent in 2020. By the middle of this century, people aged beyond 60 will take up 27.4 percent of the total population — that means one out of every four people will be senior!

The aging population poses a serious challenge to families and the society. On the one hand, with families becoming smaller and living pace escalating, it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequately. On the other hand, aging causes a relative decline in working force. Consequently, the productivity of the whole society will be affected to some extent.

The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. There is no doubt that the key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance should be attached to overall social progress by changing the backward situation in social security, welfare and service. What's more, family care and community-based services should also be encouraged.

Nearly every civilization has its own equivalent to the proverb “ No pains, no gains.” It means that nothing can be gained without painstaking efforts and that no knowledge or skill can be acquired without sweat or toil.

You don't have to look very far too prove the truth of the proverb. Darwin's great discovery was not the work of a moment but was preceded by years of patient, arduous observation. Mozart was not an accomplished pianist at the age of eight as the result of watching countless hours of TV. Nor did Edison make himself the greatest inventor in the modern world by spending his spare time on going to parties or bars. His words “Genius is 99 percent perspiration and one percent inspiration ,reveals the secret of thousands of successful men and women. All accomplishments and success come from sustained endeavor.

Although it is an old saying,“ no pains no gains” has its profound and realistic significance in our college studies. To acquire knowledge in a particular field and to attain any academic goals, great exertion and persistent effort are undoubtedly required because we all know that “No pains, no gains.”

If I could change one thing about my hometown,I think it would be the fact that there's no sense ofcommunity here. People don't feel connected, theydon't look out for each other, and they don't get toknow their neighbors.

People come and go a lot here. They change jobs frequently and move on. This means thatthey don't put down roots in the community. They don't join community organizations andthey're not willing to get involved in trying to improve the quality of life. If someone has apetition to put in a new street light, she has a very hard time getting a lot of people to sign. They don't feel it has anything to do with them. They don't get involved in improving theschools because they don't think the quality of education is important to their lives. They don'tsee the connection between themselves and the rest of their community.

People don't try to support others around them. They don't keep a friendly eyes on theirchildren, or check in on older folks if they don't see them for a few days. They're not awarewhen people around them may be going through a hard time. For example, they may not knowif a neighbor loses a loved one. There's not a lot of community support for individuals.

Neighbors don't get to know each other. Again, this is because people come and go within afew years. So when neighbors go on vacation, no one is keeping an eye on their house. No oneis making sure nothing suspicious is going on there, like lights in the middle of the night. Whenneighbors' children are cutting across someone's lawn on their bikes, there's no friendly way ofcasually mentioning the problem. People immediately act as if it's a major propertydisagreement.

My hometown is a nice place to live in many ways, but it would be much nice if we had thatsense of community.

Nowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some universities students' rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness..

This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system, They hold that since students attend the teachers' classes every day, they should have their opinion about their teachers' effectiveness. Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students' rating forms. Students should not be expected to judge whether the materials they use are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers' colleagues.

I think students' rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers' performance. Instead of rating the teachers' knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they have learned in a course, and to report on such things as a teacher's ability to communicate with students, his or her relationship with students, and his or her ability to arouse students' interest in the subject.

Should cars be allowed into College Campus?

With the rapid development of our national economy, private cars have become in large number; of course, quite a few cars are heavily driven into College Campus.

In a significant way, these cars do not take up students' places for study, but actually affect their daily life and study-- for instance, this crowd of cars may make noise and emit filthy gas to choke us to death. And the campus is jammed with lines of cars and seems to be parking lot instead of an academic institute. So cars have been strictly prohibited into many College Campuses. It seems that this is not convenience to some persons, indeed, but this is for the sake of our safety. Thus when someone enjoys convenience from modern tools, don't forget that it is dangerous to the students in the College Campus. Therefore, I agree that cars are not allowed into College Campus.

By and large, with the price of cars falling significantly, cars will enter average families, and most Chinese will enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in their life. However, they are still prohibited to drive their cars into College Campus, which,I think, is a hard truth in the eyes of most people.

Some people think that the best way to advise people is simply to find what they want and help them attain it? In my view, this method is generally not the best way to proceed in advising others; it ignores the plain truth that many people do not know what they want and do not know what is best for them.

My main reason for rejecting this technique is that people very rarely have any clear idea of what they want. This applies not only to consumer items such as clothing, cars and luxury items but also to what they want out of life in general. In fact, numerous studies have shown that most people cannot list the ten things they want most out of life, even if given considerable time to think about it.

My second reason for rejecting this method is that more often than not what people want is not what is best for them. Parents continually face this problem when advising their children. For example, suppose a child wants to quit school and get a job. Surely, the parents would be derelict in helping their child attain this want instead of convincing the child that continuing education would be in his or her best interest.

Admittedly, following the proposed advising method would result in a high rate of compliance, since the person being advised would act consistently with his or her own will by following the advice. However, as noted above, acting according to what one wants is not necessarily desirable. Proponents of this method might also point to college counselors as models of this technique. However, college counselors should not necessarily be held up as models for advising people generally, let alone as models for advising students.

Different people have different views onfirecrackers. Some people thinkthat firecrackers should be banned because they endanger people's lives andsocial security, while others hold that firecrackers arenecessary for creating gaily atmosphere of festivity.

I am in favor of the first idea. The reasons are as follows. For onething, as the chemicals used to make these fireworks may cause explosions, fireworks are especially dangerous with injuries on the eyes, hands, ears, facesand heads of young kids, for another, setting off fireworks would deterioratethe city's air pollution, seriously threatening people's health and the security ofthe world.

However,it is our traditional custom to celebrate animportant occasion with firecrackers. How can we make a balance between maintaining this customand keeping the safety to human lives and the society? One possible solution isto develop a safe substitute of the firecracker with which the functions ofcelebration maintained by applying advanced technology.

As is shown in the chart, cell phones are becoming increasingly popular within China. In 1999, the number of cell phones in use was only 2 million, but in 2002, the number reaches 5 million. And in the year 2005, the number has suddenly soared to 9 million.

There are many factors contributing to this development. Firstly, a cell phone has no wires and can be carried everywhere easily. Secondly, a cell phone is something wonderful that we can have fun with news, games, music and chat through sending short messages. Thirdly, the drop in price and the simultaneous improvement in the functions have made it possible for an average person to make use of cell phone.

The wide use of cell phones has made them more and more indispensable in people's daily life. The functions of the cell phone have made certain people reluctant to separate themselves from their cell phone.

With the popularization of computer technology, handwriting is gradually being replaced by keyboard input, giving rise to the phenomenon of “character amnesia” depicted in the picture: the man forgets how to write a word with a pen. To address this problem, I suggest that the use of typewriting be properly restricted while handwriting be vigorously encouraged.

On the one hand, typewriting leads to the decline of people's handwriting abilities. It is reported that a college student failed his interview due to his flawed resume which was full of wrongly written characters. What's more, Chinese characters embody the essence of Chinese culture. Therefore, handwriting practice should be promoted to keep our cultural heritage. While on the other hand, it is more convenient to typewrite on computers than write by hand. More importantly, a lot of office work involves typewriting on computers. Thus, the move to impose a complete ban on typewriting would go against the trend of technology.

To conclude, I think typewriting is an inevitable trend while handwriting is a cultural necessity. We should pay due attention to both.

Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the harmony in the dormitory be disturbed in one way or another.

As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together.

There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life-style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you'll just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly, you'll have to share with each other and make good friends.

In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for the sake of good study and good life.

Advertisements are forcing their way into people's lives. People refer to advertisements in their daily lives because they are consumers. The advertisers are usually manufacturers, retailers and salesmen. Their merchandise needs to be advertised to bring it to the attention to the customers. Thus nearly every product is advertised in some way. To a large extent, good advertising leads to success while bad advertising can mean failure.

There are many ways to advertise and ‘ads' come in different forms. Newspapers carry advertisements. Some products are publicized on TV and radio which bring them into notice of a wide audience. Billboards also carry advertising. Advertising is a big industry now and many agencies have been set up to furnish a variety of forms..

However, advertising is not always truthful. A product is often misrepresented. The advertiser exaggerates the benefits of the merchandise he wants to sell. Thus, he misrepresents the truth. The consumer falls victim to such advertising. Millions of people have bought advertised products and have been dissatisfied with them。

This histogram shows the number of people using blog services from January to October in 2007. From it we can see that the number of users increased monthly from January to August, except February. After two peak months, July and August, the number dropped slightly in September, while in October it picked up again.

Possible reasons for these changes are first, in February Chinese people celebrated the most important festival——Chinese New Year. This means more people spent more time with their families and friends, and therefore they didn't have as much time for surfing online. Secondly, college students are the main users of blog services. While in July and August, they had summer holidays, which enabled them to have more spare time reading and writing blogs. Thirdly, with improvements of blog services and the influence of some “star bloggers”, most of whom are celebrities, blogs are becoming an important way for people to express themselves and communicate with others. So more and more people are starting to use these services, which help explain the overall increase shown here.

Idol worshipping is not a new phenomenon, but the recent cases of unreasonable behaviors conducted by some young people have made it a focus of attention again.Especially,a young girl's father has committed suicide just to wake up his daughter who is possessed by the idea of following her idol wherever he goes.

Some people argue that the mass media is to blame for the tragedy because it always shows a picture of glamorous movie stars.pop singers and all the other entertainers that young people desire to have. However, young people are just not mature enough to tell fact from fiction.Other people believe that it shows the weakness of our educational system.School pays much attention to students' studies and exams, but overlooks their psychological status.

As far as I am concerned.the tragedy sends out an alarm signal to US all. The media, the school, the parents and even the youth themselves have to reflect on the issue and try to stop such kind of tragedy from happening again.

Nowadays it cannot be denied thatthe internet has become an important part of our life and a matter of concern for many people.

The opinions on the development of the internetvary from person to person. On one hand, some people heap high praises upon the internet.First of all, theyadvocatethat the internet furnishes us more convenience. What's more, they claim that the internet provide us higher efficiency pattern by which we can deal with most of our daily affairs.Last but not least, we can use the internet for communication, shopping, learning, and so on.

On the other hand, the internet can also do harm to us while it provides us with a lot of conveniences. For example, it carries much rubbish and even such harmful things as violence, sex, and computer viruses.

In my opinion, the internet does more good than harm.As long asauthorities take effective measures to crack down computer crimes, our lives will become richer and more colorful.
